Recent reports reveal that BCCI might allow the franchises to retain five players ahead of IPL 2025 without any retentions. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be chasing their first IPL title for the 18th time. In the process, they will be looking to form a squad that balances all the aspects and also has a core for the future.

If reports are to be believed, RCB's five retentions ahead of IPL 2025 could be Virat Kohli, Will Jakcs, Mohammed Siraj, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal. If this materialises, RCB will have to release their current skipper, Faf du Plessis, and look for a new player who could lead them.

Here are three players that RCB might target as their captain for the upcoming seasons if they come up in the auction -

3. Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram has been part of the Sunirsers Hyderabad for the past few seasons. However, ahead of IPL 2025, SRH might release Markram. The South African batter has proven himself as a leader, as he has guided the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to two consecutive SA20 titles. His presence will add solidity to the RCB middle order, and given his track record as a captain, the franchise might look to buy him and hand him over the captaincy role.

2. Steve Smith

The Australian maverick has more than once proven himself as a captain at the highest level of the game. Steve Smith's most recent achievement as a captain is leading the Washington Freedom to their maiden MLC title. Besides leading the Freedom to their first title, Smith showed a massive change in his batting approach in the T20 format. Including Smith, with his new-found batting approach, will add great flexibility and dynamism to the RCB's batting line-up.

1. KL Rahul

The Indian star has been a part of the Lucknow Super Giants since IPL 2022. However, there are reports that LSG might release him, or the star might get himself traded ahead of IPL 2025. KL Rahul has previously played for RCB and now has captaincy experience in IPL and the international level. Bringing him back will not only give them a solid Indian batter who can be flexible in the batting order but also a potential captaincy candidate.
