The 20th game of 2024 Indian Premier League was center stage to a run-feast, courtesy of Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. The Hardik Pandya-captained side got their first win of the season by decimating the Capitals by 29 runs.

Spirited batting from Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tim David and Romario Shepherd proeplled them to 234 runs in 20 overs. In contrast, the Capitals was bolstered by resilient knocks from Tristan Stubbs, Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel but eventually, Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee kept the tourists at bay with incredible bowling.

Anrich Nortje’s downfall against Romario Rampage

The 20th over in the first innings yielded 32 runs in favour of Mumbai Indians, courtesy of Romario Shepherd onslaught. The Guyanese all-rounder was pushed in the first XI of Mumbai today and it produced rich dividend.

The Capitals lost the game by 29 runs and Nortje spilled 65 runs in his four overs. Shepherd, who was batting at 7 off 4 before the last over, smoked four sixes and a couple of boundaries against the Proteas speedster. At one point, the Calypso power extracted a hat-trick of sixes between the second and fourth ball. Had the pacer been economical in the absence of Mukesh Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav, the visitors would have a better chance of winning the game against Mumbai.

Lack of firm injury backups

The Delhi Capitals have been suffering from various injuries in their camp since the last year. It was Rishabh Pant who missed the last edition and now, the absence of Mukesh Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav and Mitch Marsh hurt them badly.

Mukesh was amusing with the old ball against Chennai Super Kings in Visakhapatnam, the only game that the Capitals won thus far in IPL 2024. Kuldeep Yadav was in brilliant form with the ball since the past few months but his niggle is a cause of headache for the management. In addition, Marsh, who would provide some crucial wickets with two-three overs of seam-up, is injured as well.

In their absence, DC had to rely on Lalit Yadav, Jhye Richardson and Kumar Kushagra who poorly failed to fill the voids. Richardson and Lalit conceded runs at an economy of 10 and 15 respectively while Kushagra was dismissed for a golden duck.

Powerplay approach

The intent of the Capitals batters during the powerplay was weird. While David Warner was dismissed early, Abishek Porel and Prithvi Shaw were going at slow rate chasing a target of 235 runs. They could score just 46 runs inside the powerplay with Warner getting out for 8-ball 10 in the fourth over.

Porel faced six balls, scoring eight runs while Shaw scored only 27 runs after facing 27 deliveries at the end of the powerplay. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians scored 75 runs inside the field restrictions, eventually 29 runs being the margin of defeat for the Capitals, equalising the difference in the powerplay scores of both teams.
