The Lucknow Super Giants faced the Delhi Capitals in the 26th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). The game was played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

The Super Giants won the toss and opted to bat first. They had a fragile start and were reduced to 94/7 in the 13th. It took a brilliant effort by Ayush Badoni (55 off 35) and support from Arshad Khan (20* off 16) to take the team's total to a respectable 167/7 in 20 overs.

In the chase, Prithvi Shaw gave the Capitals a great start. Although they lost David Warner early, Fraser-McGruk joined Shaw and ensured that the Capitals marched powerfully towards the target. Young Fraser-McGurk played a blazing knock of 55 runs from 35 deliveries, making the task more accessible for the Capitals. His aggressive batting meant that even though they lost a couple of wickets, they went past the target in the 19th over with six wickets remaining.

Why Krunal Pandya emerges as the Match Criminal?

Krunal's Failure as a batter

Krunal Pandya came in at a stage when the Super Giants were struggling at 89 for six down in 11.5 overs. Ayush Badoni looked good on the opposite end, and Krunal needed to build a partnership with him. But he played only four deliveries and departed after contributing only three runs. With most of the batters failing, one can still look past this effort by Krunal, but his efforts with the ball cost LSG the game.

Krunal's failure as a bowler

In the previous game, Krunal Pandya emerged as the hero with the ball for the Lucknow Super Giants. With the wicket at Ekana slowing down, KL Rahul trusted him and brought him into the attack in the sixth over of the DC innings. With two right-handers in the crease, it was expected that Krunal would cause trouble for the batters and put a break on the steady progress of the Delhi innings.

But in the second ball of his spell, Krunal fired a delivery down the leg stump and conceded five wides. He conceded 17 runs in that over and helped the DC batters to accelerate even further.

He was re-introduced in the 13th over when DC needed 68 runs in eight overs. A couple of good overs could have put DC under pressure. But Fraser-McGurk took Krunal to the cleaners in this over. He kept bowling with pace and in the slot of the batter, and the young Aussie just kept dismissing him out of the ground. 21 runs were conceded in the over, which practically ended the game as a competition.

Panyda is a vital cog in the LSG mechanism, and his failure was one of the prime reasons the Super Giants ended up in the wrong side of the game.
