The first T20 between India and West Indies ends thrillingly with the hosts securing a victory by four runs and taking an early lead in the series. West Indies' innings didn't have the best of starts as they lost their openers in the powerplay again. The contribution from Nicholas Pooran and skipper Rovman Powell did get them out of a sticky situation but with only 42 runs in the last five due to some excellent bowling from the Indians ended on a below-par total of 149 in their 20 overs.

India, while chasing, showed a poor display of batting while chasing a reasonably modest total. Most Indian batters threw their wickets away after good starts and lost wickets at regular intervals. Even though there were some crucial runs by the tail-enders like Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh, it was not enough to get the Indians over the line.

Partnership Puzzle: India’s Loss Highlights Partnership Instability

The lack of good partnership led to India's defeat against West Indies in the first T20I. Right from the start, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Shubman Gill's early dismissal was a big blow for India, as he is known for his ability to provide a strong start at the top of the order. Losing a wicket with just five runs on the board in the 2nd over disrupted India's plans.

The loss of Ishan Kishan's wicket in the 5th over further hampered India's progress, and his dismissal after scoring only six runs was disappointing for the team. Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Tilak Verma tried to build a partnership and stabilise India's innings after the early wickets. However, losing Suryakumar Yadav's wicket when the team was on 67 runs was a setback for India.

Tilak Verma's performance in his debut match was the only positive for India. Scoring 39 runs and looking comfortable at the crease indicates he handled the pressure well. However, Tilak Verma got out soon after Suryakumar Yadav. The turning point in the match came when India needed 37 runs off 30 balls and lost two crucial wickets quickly.

Losing the wickets of Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson in quick succession dealt a severe blow to India's chances of chasing down the target. After losing Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson in quick succession, it became difficult for the incoming batters to take control of the situation and finish the chase. In the end, India fell short by four runs.

Conclusion

Although this was a close encounter, we cannot ignore that this was one of the most disappointing batting performances by the men in blue in chasing a total that was far from intimidating. The Indian batters threw away their good starts at crucial moments of the game, making it difficult for the new batters down the order.

It is also essential to give the West Indies bowlers credit for bowling good lines and lengths and mixing their pace well on a dry wicket that supported the spinners more than the pacers and held their nerve towards the end brilliantly. With this victory, the West Indies will be more confident going into the next game, and this relatively young Indian team should look into their problems of building partnerships in the middle.
