Virat Kohli stands on the brink of another spectacular record next to his name ahead of the opening Test of the much-anticipated two-match series in South Africa, starting Tuesday (December 26).

As the modern-day maestro approaches the Boxing Day Test in Centurion, he is about to break past legends Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag's records against South Africa.

With a whopping 1,236 runs made in 14 Tests at an exceptional average of 56.18, Kohli is fourth in the list of esteemed highest Indian run-makers in Tests against the Proteas.

However, another 17 runs will take him past third-placed legend Dravid, who is India's current head coach and had a tally of 1,252 runs made across 21 Tests versus the team from the rainbow nation at an average of 33.83.

Kohli should easily surpass Dravid's record and become the third-placed batter in the list. But if he scores 71 runs in the Centurion Test or the series, he will also leapfrog the swashbuckling Sehwag at the second spot. Sehwag retired from Test cricket with 1,306 runs made at an average of 50.23 from 15 Tests against South Africa.

Numero uno Sachin Tendulkar, though, remains out of Kohli's reach for now in the coveted list as the Master Blaster stands on the top with 1,741 runs made from 25 Tests and 45 innings at an average of 42.46, dominating the opposition home and away.

Kohli is also the third-highest century-maker on the list with three tons. Behind Tendulkar's unmatched tally of seven and Sehwag's five hundreds made against the Proteas alone.

The 34-year-old is on his fourth Test trip to the rainbow nation and will be eyeing another prolific set of innings to try and help India rewrite the history books with a maiden series victory in the country.
