How Josh Inglis' IPL auction move could be a blessing in disguise for PBKS in 2026 season?

Australian wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis’ move away from Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the IPL 2026 season initially appeared to be a major setback for the franchise. Inglis, who played an important role in PBKS’ run to the final in IPL 2024, was released after informing the team of his limited availability due to his upcoming marriage.

Despite the BCCI officially notifying franchises that Inglis would be available for only four matches, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) went on to acquire him for a hefty INR 8.60 crore at the Abu Dhabi auction.

While PBKS were forced to part ways with a proven performer, the franchise’s response, signing young Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly for INR 3 crore, might prove to be a strategically astute decision rather than a downgrade.

Josh Inglis’ performance for PBKS and Connolly's likely future

Notably, Josh Inglis’ IPL 2024 numbers were respectable. He scored 278 runs in 11 matches, averaging 30.88 with an impressive strike rate of 162.6. His true value, however, lay in high-pressure situations.

Against Mumbai Indians late in the season, Inglis produced two defining knocks, 73 off 42 balls in the final league game to secure a top-two finish, followed by 38 off 21 balls in Qualifier 2, helping PBKS reach the final.

Yet, availability is a critical factor in IPL squad building. A player missing the majority of the tournament disrupts continuity and planning. From that perspective, PBKS’ decision to move on, though painful, was unavoidable.

Enter Cooper Connolly, a 22-year-old left-handed batter who has rapidly built a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting young prospects.

His recent performances in the Big Bash League 2025–26 might be turn out to be a great decision. Notably, in just two innings this season for the Perth Scorchers, Connolly has amassed 136 runs with an average of 68 and strike rate of 200.

These numbers are not a small-sample anomaly either. Across his BBL career, Connolly has scored 713 runs in 24 innings at a strike rate of 145.51, which clearly shows power-hitting ability rather than a brief purple patch.

Tactical advantages for PBKS after buying Cooper Connolly

Beyond raw numbers, Connolly offers multiple strategic benefits:

Middle-order stability and flexibility

  • With Inglis no longer available, PBKS had a glaring vacancy at No. 3. Connolly’s ability to bat at No 3 or No. 4 fits seamlessly into the team structure and allows the franchise to maintain momentum through the middle overs.

Left-right combination

  • It is worth mentioning that PBKS’ top order could feature Priyansh Arya (left-handed) and Prabhsimran Singh (right-handed) as openers. Connolly’s left-handed presence at No. 3 disrupts opposition bowling plans and enhances matchup advantages, something modern T20 teams prioritise heavily.

Great addition as he also bowls

  • Unlike Inglis, Connolly contributes with the ball as well. His left-arm spin provides PBKS with an extra bowling option, increasing tactical flexibility and reducing over-dependence on specialist bowlers.

Conclusion

There is no denying that losing Josh Inglis hurts. Although, Connolly may lack IPL experience; his recent form and skill set suggest he can grow into the role rather than merely fill it.

If PBKS back Connolly with consistent opportunities at No. 3 or No. 4, this enforced change could evolve into one of the smartest decisions of their IPL 2026 campaign. What initially looked like a compromise might well turn out to be a calculated upgrade for the future.
