Pakistan's World Cup 2023 hopes are almost over after New Zealand thumped Sri Lanka by five wickets in Bengaluru on Thursday. There are, however, still some mathematical numbers in their favour, even if none of them is likely to occur.

In Pakistan's final World Cup match against England, which will take place at Eden Gardens on Saturday, the Men in Green must beat England by 275 runs to topple the Kiwis. In addition, if they chase, the target should be sealed within 2.3 overs.

To make things sound even more implausible, Pakistan needs to reach the 300-run threshold in six overs if England reach there batting first. As it always goes over the top, that’s what the statistics are saying in practical terms.

At this point, New Zealand’s NRR read +0.743, with 10 points from nine matches having been won five times. Pakistan, on the other hand, have got eight points from the same number of games, with the NRR reading +0.036.

It is crucial to remember that Babar Azam's Pakistan will play India under Rohit Sharma, even if they miraculously qualify. In that case, Eden Gardens will take center stage, as the venue has already been decided.
