The IPL 2025 saw franchises dealing with multiple injury setbacks to key players throughout the tournament. For some of the teams, these replacements turned out to be super subs.
Notably, the replacements signed by the franchises before the May 9 suspension are eligible for retention ahead of IPL 2026. In this article, we will take a look at the five replacement players that their franchises might look to retain.
2 CSK Players
Ayush Mhatre for CSK [Source: AFP Media]
Ayush Mhatre: The 17-year-old opener came in as a replacement for the injured CSK captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ayush Mhatre arrived and changed the batting template of the franchise. He scored 240 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 188.97. His blazing start at the beginning of the innings provided the platform for the Super Kings to score big runs and be competitive towards the end of the tournament.
Dewald Brevis: The young South African batter came in as a replacement for the Indian pacer Gurjapneet Singh. Dewald Brevis's presence improved the middle-order scoring rate of the Super Kings. In six matches, he scored 225 runs at a strike rate of 180. The impact that he had in the middle-overs will induce the Super Kings to retain him ahead of the next season.
PBKS All-rounder
Mitchell Owen: The Australian all-rounder came in as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell. Although he did not get many opportunities to prove his utility to the team, Mitchell Owen has proved himself as an all-rounder after that in other leagues and also in the T20Is. His ability to score quick runs at any number in the batting line-up and also his ability to bowl a few important overs make him a very important asset for the team. Glenn Maxwell had a poor IPL, and it could be that they release the 'Big Show' to retain Owen.
LSG's Replacement Retention
Shardul Thakur: The veteran Indian pacer came in as a replacement for the injured pacer, Mohsin Khan. Shardul Thakur had a brilliant start to his stint with the LSG; however, as the tournament progressed, his consistency became a problem. But given the injury proneness of Mohsin Khan, LSG might look to retain Shardul ahead of the next season.
MI's Retention Candidate
Corbin Bosch: The South African all-rounder was called in as a replacement for Lizaad Williams. While Williams is an outright bowler, Corbin Bosch adds depth with both his trades. Given the versatility and dynamism that he brings to the squad, there is a chance that MI might retain him.
