The 2025 campaign of the Mumbai Indians exposed some critical flaws that cost them crucial games. With the IPL 2026 mini-auction approaching, MI need to be strategic about their recruitments. They will target some of the key spots and go one better in the next edition of the tournament.

5. Matt Short

The Australian could be a great inclusion in the side. Matt Short has proven his credibility in the format with both his batting and bowling. Although most of his success with the bat has come at the top of the order, and MI have plenty of players there, using Short as a floater could be a good option.

During the 2025 season, MI showed susceptibility in their spin department. The lack of a proper spinner often let games slip from them in the middle phase. The presence of Short would give the skipper an added dynamism, depth and flexibility in the middle-order.

4. Sarfaraz Khan

Well, this might seem like an odd choice. But in some of the games during the IPL 2025 season, we saw that MI gave away some matches because their middle-order failed to maximise the start that was given by the batters at the top.

The presence of Sarfaraz Khan will give MI a player who can play spin well. An Indian batter who can keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle phase and up the ante once set could be a prized possession for the five-time IPL champions.

3. Vidwath Kaverappa

The inconsistency of Deepak Chahar was a significant weakness for the Mumbai Indians during the 2025 season. The franchise would be looking for a support Indian seamer who can be useful alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.

Vidwath Kaverappa has proven himself as a lethal customer with the new cherry in almost all formats. He has been very effective at the beginning of the games in the domestic arena. MI could think of buying Kaverappa and strengthening their Indian pace arsenal.

2. Ayush Doseja

The middle-order batter for the West Delhi Lions has been a revelation in this edition of the Delhi Premier League. In seven matches, Ayush Doseja has scored 240 runs at a strike rate of 151.90.

Acquiring the youngster can add fire to the middle-phase batting of MI. Along with Suryakumar Yadav, Doseja's presence can bolster the MI to scores which might be well beyond the reach of their opponents.

1. Jason Behrendorff

During the IPL 2025 season, the MI bowling looked overly dependent on Jasprit Bumrah in some cases. Trent Boult did step up on occasions, but in the death phase, the onus was mostly on Bumrah to bail them out.

For the following season, they can look to find an additional bowler for the death overs. In that case, Jason Behrendorff would be a great option. He has proven credentials in almost all phases of the game and could be a huge utility pick for the franchise.
