Henrich Klaasen has been in dismal form lately [Source: @chalchitra11/x.com]
South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen is the kind of player who can turn a game on its head in minutes. When he gets going, bowlers start panicking, captains lose sleep, and fielders become mere spectators.
Klaasen is a modern-day destroyer, who doesn’t just score runs but rips apart bowling attacks with his brutal power-hitting. But here’s the problem. He is nowhere near his best right now.
As South Africa gears up for the Champions Trophy 2025, there’s one concern in their squad: the dip in Klaasen’s form. This is a batter who has been their middle-order enforcer, someone they bank on to demolish attacks in the latter stages of an innings.
But heading into a tournament where South Africa will be up against spin-heavy attacks, Klaasen’s struggles could be a huge red flag. With South Africa placed in Group B alongside Afghanistan, Australia, and England, they can’t afford a middle-order collapse in a high-pressure ICC event.
Let’s take a look at 3 reasons why Heinrich Klaasen will fail during the Champions Trophy.
3. Strength turned into weakness
For the last few years, Klaasen has been one of the best players of spin in world cricket. He has bullied spinners, smashing them for huge sixes and making them look clueless. But lately, this strength has become his weakness
- In recent series, spinners have found a way to trap him, knowing that he loves to counterattack.
- Instead of being patient, he has been guilty of forcing the issue, leading to some ugly dismissals.
- With Pakistan’s conditions favouring spinners and packed with quality tweakers, he might find himself in trouble again.
If he doesn’t find a way to adapt, expect him to walk back to the pavlilion sooner than later.
2. Poor Recent Form
Even the best in the world go through lean patches, and Klaasen is no exception. But what makes his dip in form concerning is that it has stretched across multiple tournaments and formats.
- In the Pakistan ODI series (Dec-Jan 2024-25), he smashed 264 runs in 3 innings which is great. But before that, he struggled big time.
- India T20I series (Nov 2024) – 68 runs in 4 innings at an average of 17.00.
- CSA T20 2024-25 (Sep-Oct 2024) – 115 runs in 5 innings at 28.75.
- MLC 2024 (July 2024) – 97 runs in 6 innings at 16.17.
- T20 World Cup 2024 (June 2024) – 190 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of just 126.67.
These aren’t the kind of numbers you expect from someone regarded as one of the world’s most destructive middle-order batters. If he fails to snap out of this slump, South Africa’s middle order could be in serious trouble.
1. SA20 Nightmare
If there was ever a tournament where Klaasen needed to find his form, it was SA20 2025. Playing in familiar home conditions should have helped him get back in rhythm, but things went from bad to worse.
- 10 matches, 198 runs at an average of 28.28 and a strike rate of 134.69.
- These are well below his usual standards and to make things worse, his team Durban’s Super Giants finished dead last.
Klaasen has been carrying the reputation of being South Africa’s go-to match-winner but his performances haven’t lived up to the hype. Heading into the Champions Trophy, confidence will be low and unless he finds a way to fix things quickly, he could be in for a rough ride.
