Mumbai Indians fast bowler Gerald Coetzee castled LSG’s number six Ashton Turner with searing pace to initiate a little spark towards the closing stages of their IPL 2024 clash at Lucknow.

Brought back to bowl after his wicketless opening spell, the South African paceman struck straightaway as LSG slipped to 123-5 in a chase of 145.

Defending 145 for a win, Mumbai Indians quick Gerald Coetzee conceded 24 runs off his first two overs of the innings against LSG. While he was subsequently ruled out of the attack for a while, visiting skipper Hardik Pandya brought him back to bowl the 18th over of the innings at a time when LSG required just 22 runs from the remaining 18 balls.

As it turned out, Coetzee struck straightaway in the first ball of his new spell by cleaning up LSG’s number six batter Ashton Turner. As Turner attempted to move across for a potential lap shot, he was done in by the speedster’s extra pace.

Notably, Gerald Coetzee’s timely breakthrough not only initiated Mumbai Indians’ brief fightback against LSG, but also brought him closer to teammate Jasprit Bumrah in the ‘Purple Cap’ race of the IPL 2024 season. The South African-based cricketer now has 13 wickets to his name while senior man Bumrah continues to remain the season’s highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps.

Regardless of Coetzee’s late strike, LSG managed to overhaul their target in the final over of the match. Nicholas Pooran kept cool to score a run-a-ball 14* after number three Marcus Stoinis top-scored in the innings with a scintillating 45-ball 62.

The outcome marked Mumbai Indians’ third defeat in succession this IPL 2024 season as they continue to languish at number nine on the 10-team points table.
