Stripped off his captaincy, Rohit Sharma took field for Mumbai Indians under the leadership of newly-appointed skipper Hardik Pandya against Gujarat Titans in their opening match of the IPL 2024 season on March 24.

As it happened, the occasion turned out to be a bittersweet one for the five-time IPL-winning skipper. While Sharma received a grand welcome at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium prior to the game, the cricketer found himself in an awkward position a couple of times on the field before Mumbai Indians eventually slipped to a six-run defeat to the hosts.

At one point of the game, an unaware Sharma was asked to change his fielding position by Pandya, when the latter was discussing the placements with firebrand fast bowler Gerald Coetzee.

The moment soon went viral across all social media platforms, with several Mumbai Indians fans accusing skipper Pandya of belittling the legendary opening batsman.

Indian-born USA cricketer Jaskaran Malhotra also took note of the occasion, and shared the video with a hint of humor on his X profile (formerly Twitter).

Shortly after Rohit Sharma found himself in an awkward situation in front of captain Hardik Pandya’s orders, Indian-born USA cricketer Jaskaran Malhotra shared the video of the moment on his social media accounts and signified the rarity of the situation in a hilarious manner.

Malhotra, who took the world by storm by smacking six sixes in an over during a 2021 ODI match, jokingly described the Sharma-Pandya moment by calling it a 'kalyug'.

In another incident in the same game, Rohit Sharma was unknowingly ignored by Mumbai Indians fast bowler Luke Wood.

On the cricketing front, Sharma listed a 29-ball 43 in the run-chase and shared a fighting partnership with Dewald Brevis. Regardless, the Mumbai Indians team ended up falling six runs short of their target to kick-off their IPL 2024 campaign on a losing note.

Hardik Pandya and co. will now face the SRH group in Hyderabad on March 27.
