Ricky Ponting’s association with the Indian Premier League spans over a decade, transitioning from a celebrated player to a successful coach. However, the recent stint with Punjab Kings might be his most memorable one.

The PBKS coach revealed what he did to tweak and uplift the team morale as soon as he took the helm as the coach in a recent interaction with Star Sports.

Ricky Ponting Opens Up On PBKS' Journey So Far

Speaking to the broadcasters, Ponting shared his first experience and his words given to the Punjab Kings owners as to how he would change things.

"Well it's funny. When I first got the job, The one thing I said to the owners was that I'm gonna make things different. I don't need the players to buy into everything I'm talking about and they're the ones who's gonna change not me. You know I can give them all the ideas and ways and try to create a culture but we're all in it together," Ponting said.

Speaking of enjoying the game, Ponting shared that the team is positive both on and off the field and will continue to do so.

"When we get in our team hotel and team room there's a lot of fun happening and it's easy to have that when you win games and you know that's at7th win for the season nowso we gotta make sure we keep enjoying it," Ponting added.

However, Ponting also elaborated on the Aussie mentality that he is slowly imbibing in the Punjab players.

"There's a few weeks to go in this tournament and we haven't achieved anything yet. We have played good cricket but we haven't achieved anything. So there's plenty more for us to achieve as a team going forward," Ponting added.

Ponting's Coaching Journey In IPL

Notably, after retiring from international cricket, Ricky Ponting joined Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff in 2014, becoming their head coach in 2015. Under his guidance, MI clinched their second IPL title in 2015.

He later moved to Delhi Capitals in 2018, where he coached the team to three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021, including their maiden IPL final in 2020. However, after three seasons without playoff qualification, Ponting parted ways with DC in 2024.

Ahead of IPL 2025, Ponting was appointed head coach of Punjab Kings on a four-year deal, tasked with transforming a franchise that has never won the IPL and last made the playoffs in 2014.

PBKS' Smooth IPL 2025 Journey

In IPL 2025, Punjab Kings have been impressive, sitting second on the points table with 15 points from 11 matches, just behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With seven wins, PBKS have shown consistency and fighting spirit, making them strong contenders for their elusive first title.
