Josh Inglis steered Australia to an imposing five-wicket victory over England in match four of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Lahore. Batting at number five in a chase of 352, Inglis belted an unbeaten 120 from just 86 balls with eight boundaries and six sixes as Australia stormed past England’s 351 with 15 balls to spare.
During the presentation ceremony, Australian captain Steve Smith joked about the British heritage of Josh Inglis after England commentator Michael Atherton asked him if the wicketkeeper-batter was still carrying his English passport.
Steve Smith says Josh Inglis ‘committed’ to Australia
After the match, Australian skipper Steve Smith heaped significant praise on centurion Josh Inglis as well as on half-centurion Alex Carey for mowing down England’s huge total. During the presentation ceremony, Smith was also jokingly asked by England commentator Michael Atherton if Inglis was still carrying his English passport.
The Australian captain broke into laughter and responded:
“I don't know if Josh still has an English passport. But he's not going anywhere!”
It is worth noting that Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis was born in England before moving to Australia with his family at the age of 14. The cricketer made his Test debut for Australia last month and he celebrated the occasion by recording 102 runs from just 94 balls.
AUS vs ENG: As it happened
England batted first and racked up 351-8 from 50 overs courtesy of Ben Duckett’s career-best knock of 165. Senior man Joe Root also minted 68 runs off just 78 balls during the middle overs to defy the likes of Ben Dwarshuis (3-66) and senior Australian spinner Joe Root (2-64).
In response, Australia slipped to 27-2 before Matthew Short struck a belligerent half-century at the top of the order. Josh Inglis made 120* from just 86 balls, and shared a match-defining 146-run partnership with Alex Carey (69 off 63) to make lightwork of England’s total.
