Cricket fans across the globe might still be wrapping their heads around it but Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket is as real as it gets. The bombshell dropped last month through a heartfelt post from the man himself and while India have already named a fresh-faced squad for the England tour, the aftershocks are far from over.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal Urges Kohli To Rethink Test Retirement
Now, IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has stepped in, urging Kohli to rethink his Test call and continue playing the longest format. And if that wasn’t enough, Dhumal also hopes the IPL won’t be next on Kohli’s retirement list, especially if RCB finally lifts the trophy on June 3.
In a chat with PTI Videos, Dhumal couldn’t stop gushing about Kohli’s unreal fitness levels.
“Fitness that Virat has, he is probably fitter than he was in season 1," Dhumal said. “His commitment to cricket is equivalent to what Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic is to tennis.”
That is some seriously elite company. And to be fair, Virat Kohli has shown no signs of slowing down, smashing runs, pulling off direct hits and sprinting like a 21-year-old in IPL 2025.
RCB's Title Run And Retirement Chatter
Now, with the trophy just one win away, fans and officials are hoping the dream finish doesn’t come with a double goodbye.
“The whole country would want Virat to continue, and I would want him to reconsider his decision to retire from Test Cricket. I hope that he doesn’t take retirement from IPL, he is the greatest ambassador for the sport,” Dhumal added.
The way things are going, if RCB do the unthinkable and lift the cup, Kohli walking away from the IPL stage might just break the internet and a million hearts with it.
No IPL Team Expansion In Sight
On a different note, Dhumal also cleared the air about the league’s future. Despite its growing popularity and ever-expanding fan base, no new teams are being added anytime soon.
“We just added two teams three seasons ago,” Dhumal said. “There’s no discussion around further expansion yet, the quality of IPL is very high.”
He also praised the ongoing season, calling it “phenomenal” and acknowledged the huge momentum RCB and the league overall have built heading into the final.
