India is celebrating its 77th Independence Day today. Celebrated on August 15th each year, Independence Day marks the nation's freedom from British colonial rule in 1947.

The day is observed with patriotic fervour - flag hoisting is done in several parts of the country, people walk in parades, and a majority of Indians greet each other on the occasion through social media.

Captain of Indian Cricket Team across all formats, Rohit Sharma also extended greetings to his fellow countrymen on the occasion of Independence Day.

"The tricolour means more than words can ever convey. Happy Independence Day," Sharma wrote on his X account.

Not just Sharma, several Indian cricketers have posted greetings on the auspicious occasion.

"Heartiest Greetings to all on #IndependenceDayIndia. Lets remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and resolve to take the country on the path of peace, harmony and progress. Our every step should ensure that we are contributing to the Nation," wrote Harbhajan Singh.

Irfan Pathan, meanwhile, shared a picture of himself at a cricket stadium where the tricolor can be seen waved by a fan.

The all-rounder, in emotional post, wrote:"The blurry image of the flag you see in this picture is not just a flag, it’s an emotion which I wore on my chest for my entire career. Let us keep our flag flying high. Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Indians."

On the work front, Rohit will next be seen in the Asia Cup, which will be played in Sri Lanka and Pakistan from August 30. However, his biggest assignment this year will be the ODI World Cup in October, in which India is looking to end it's long wait of winning an ICC trophy.

The last time India won an ICC trophy was in 2013, when MS Dhoni led them to a Champions Trophy win.
