Delhi Capitals slumped to a huge 67-run defeat at the hands of an all-firing SRH squadron in match number 35 of the IPL 2024 season. Hosting the ‘Orange Army’ at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on April 20, Rishabh Pant and co. failed to chase down their monumental 267-run task to slip to number seven on the IPL 2024 points table.

After the match, losing skipper Pant claimed that SRH’s record-shattering powerplay start made the primary difference in the outcome of the game, and also praised young Australian star Jake Fraser-McGurk for playing a defiant hand in an otherwise lackluster run-chase.

Pant hails SRH openers for game-changing powerplay

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant claimed that his team would have fancied chasing down a 230-run total before he admitted that SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma shaped a match-defining start within the powerplay overs itself.

According to Pant, SRH’s 125-0 by the competition of the first six overs made a huge dent to Delhi Capitals’ prospects as they ended up sustaining a huge 67-run larruping to register their fifth defeat of the IPL 2024 season. He said:

“The only thought process behind the toss was the dew which didn't come. If we restricted them to 220-230, we still would have a chance. Powerplay was the difference. They got around 120-130 and we were just catching up throughout the match. That was the massive difference.”

Rishabh Pant also hailed young Jake Fraser-McGurk for bashing a fighting 18-ball 65 at the top following the early dismissals of openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner. The Delhi Capitals skipper added:

“Jake Fraser-McGurk is batting phenomenal and coming nice for us. That's what you want. More about sticking together as a team at the hardest time. Its difficult pill to swallow but we need to look at areas to improve and come back for the next game.”

Rishabh Pant will now lead his Delhi Capitals troops against Gujarat Titans in match number 40 of the IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited contest will also be hosted by Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 24.
