A record-breaking Day 1 of the ongoing second Test between South Africa and India at Cape Town witnessed as many as 23 wickets fall, where both teams finished their first innings.

Proteas stand-in captain, Dean Elgar who had a poor outing, batted twice and scored 12 and 2 in his final Test for South Africa, stated that the home side were surprised with the track on offer.

Speaking to Star Sports, post the conclusion of Day 1, Elgar explained how the pitch quickened up as the sessions progressed.

Here's what Elgar said

"It (the pitch) generally plays a little bit slower and as a batter you can adjust to that. This one just seemed to get quicker as the session went on. From the naked eye it actually didn't look too bad," Elgar said. "The wickets of the past, even domestically, haven't played at all badly. They've actually been quite good. It didn't look horrible."

"Still, he expected it to retain its bat-first quality and decided to stick to that but knowing this wicket was going to play like that, I would not have chosen it."

Former South Africa player, and current batting consultant Ashwell Prince, also expressed his shock over such a track on Day 1 of a Test at Newlands, that yielded 23 wickets, the second-most on a single day , just below 25, which came back in 1902.

At stumps on Day 1, South Africa were 63 for 3, with Aiden Markram and David Bedingham batting on 36* and 7*, respectively trailing India by 36 runs.
