Mitchell Marsh came out in defence of his viral 'feet on World Cup 2023 trophy' image criticised by several fans and fellow international players, including Indian seamer Mohammed Shami

The experienced Australian allrounder, who was subjected to nasty remarks by Indian fans on social media for his act of implying the world is on Aussies' feet after their famous triumph in Ahmedabad, has now responded to the comments on the outside by insisting he didn't mean any disrespect to the trophy.

Marsh had been clicked inside the Australian dressing room with both his feet firmly placed on the gold-made globe design that rests on top of the ICC World Cup trophy. It may have been a gesture made in jest and celebrations for dominating the summit clash against Men in Blue, but the act didn't go down well with Shami.

The veteran pacer had laid bare "I am hurt" by the disrespect caused to the trophy for which the 10 best teams of the world fought hard over the past month and a half. Soon, an activist in Uttar Pradesh had even filed an FIR against Marsh for hurting the sentiments of billions.

"All countries fight for this trophy, everyone wants to lift the trophy over their head. And I didn't like that he rested his foot on that trophy. He should not be doing that," Shami had said during a media interaction, attacking the Aussie cricketer before Indian fans jumped in the bandwagon and targeted Marsh via social media.

Finally responding to them upon his return home during a conversation with Australia-based 'SEN', Marsh defended his celebrations by stating he didn't mean to mock the trophy or cause any harm to the sentiments carried by the fans and Indian team.

"There was obviously no disrespect meant in that photo at all. I haven’t given it too much thought, I haven’t seen a lot on social media even though everyone tells me it’s gone off. There’s nothing in that," he said.

Marsh was one of the heroes of the remarkable triumph on Indian shores after hammering 441 runs in his 10 innings of the competition at a strike-rate of 107.56. The top-order aggressor not only played his role to perfection but also bagged individual milestones, scoring two centuries and half-century.
