According to former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill could potentially form an iconic opening pair like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. This claim gained more ground on August 12, when Jaiswal and Gill showcased an impressive display in the fourth T20I against West Indies in Florida. Their partnership of 165 runs off 93 balls played a significant role in India's comprehensive victory by nine wickets, levelling the series 2-2.

The duo's outstanding performance not only tied the record for India's highest opening partnership in T20Is but also sparked discussions about their potential to emulate the Tendulkar-Ganguly partnership.

Uthappa highlighted the synchronisation and potential of Jaiswal and Gill's batting, suggesting they can complement each other effectively.

He expressed optimism that if they continue to develop this synergy, they could become a formidable and influential pairing for India, akin to the legendary Tendulkar-Ganguly opening duo.

'They can be something as great as a Sachin and Ganguly': Uthappa on Gill-Jaiswal

"Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting,"  Uthappa said during a conversation on Jio Cinema following the match.

Tendulkar and Ganguly formed one of the most triumphant batting partnerships in cricket history. The legendary pair holds the record for the highest partnership runs in ODIs, amassing 8227 runs, with 6609 coming as openers. Over 136 innings, their partnership averaged an impressive 49.32, including 21-century stands.

The new-look opening pair of Gill and Jaiswal will be seen in action next when India cross swords with the West Indies in the series finale in Florida on August 13.
