A composed, unbeaten half-century from Deepti Sharma guided India Women to a commanding four-wicket victory over England Women in the first ODI at Southampton, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
While the bowlers set up the chase by restricting England to 258/6, it was Deepti's ice-cool 62* under pressure that drew special praise from victorious captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
Kaur Addresses Fielding Woes For Team India
Elated with the team's performance and the series lead, Captain Harmanpreet Kaur dissected the win while also addressing the fielding woes.
"Obviously it's a very good feeling. We played really well today. Credit goes to the bowlers and also with the way Deepti played at the end. It was a very crucial innings. Really happy with the way the entire team performed today. But I think fielding is something we are really working on it. Today also we missed a few chances but in the next game, we will try to put our best on the field." Kaur said in the post-match presentation.
While praising the bowlers' strong start, Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged room for improvement after the first ODI against England Women.
"Well, I thought we still gave away 20-25 runs extra over there. We started strong but still it was a really good effort from our bowlers," Kaur added.
Kaur Confident In Batting Unit
Harmanpreet expressed confidence in the batting unit's plan. "We started really well in the run chase as well. We knew that if we stay there in the middle, we could chase it down," Kaur added.
The victory marks a significant start for India in the ODI leg of the tour. With the 2nd ODI dated for July 19, India would like to bag the series with another win at Lord's. However, with fielding identified as a work-on, Harmanpreet Kaur & Co. will try to be their best in the upcoming clashes.
