Afghanistan star cricketer Mohammad Nabi, who turned 40, has surprised everyone by deciding to continue playing One Day Internationals (ODIs) even after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Initially, he had planned to retire after the tournament, but now he wants to stay in the game a little longer. His main motivation? A dream to share the field with his 18-year-old son, Hassan Eisakhil.
Nabi, a legendary all-rounder, has played 170 ODIs for Afghanistan, scoring 3,618 runs and taking 172 wickets. While speaking to the ICC before the Champions Trophy 2025, he revealed his new goal—to play international cricket alongside his son.
“These might not be my last ODIs (the Champions Trophy), and I will probably play less ODIs and give chances to the youngsters to build experience. I’ve discussed with the senior players, and in the high-level games, maybe or maybe not, we’ll see. It will depend on my fitness," Nabi was quoted as saying by ICC.
For Nabi, sharing the field with his son would be a proud moment.
"It’s my dream (to play together for the country), and hopefully we can do it. He (Eisakhil) is doing very well. He is a hard worker, and I’m also pushing him to work," he said.
Mohammad Nabi's Stunning ODI Journey
Nabi made his ODI debut in 2009 against Scotland and last played a 50-over match in December 2024 against Zimbabwe. His next match will be on February 21, 2025, when Afghanistan faces South Africa in their opening game of the Champions Trophy in Karachi.
This will be Afghanistan’s first-ever appearance in the prestigious tournament. They are placed in Group B alongside cricket powerhouses England, Australia, and South Africa. The team earned their spot after an impressive performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they finished sixth.
Who is Mohammad Nabi's Son?
Hassan Eisakhil is Mohammad Nabi's son. While his father is an all-rounder, Hassan plays as a batter. He represented Afghanistan's under-19 team in the 2024 World Cup.
