Jasprit Bumrah’s return to competitive cricket coincides with a rare captaincy stint as he will lead a young Indian team against Ireland in three T20I matches. The speedster last turned up for India back in September 2022, before he was subsequently sidelined from the team owing to his back injury.

Bumrah missed out the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, and had to watch the entirety of IPL 2023 from the sidelines as he was working towards attaining full recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

A day prior to his much-awaited return to international cricket, the 29-year-old sat down at the press conference to address team’s preparations. At one point, he was asked to give his take on fulfilling the new-ball void again in the Indian team, which was sorely missed by team captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid in the last few months.

Bumrah says he does not burden himself with others’ expectations

During the press conference, Jasprit Bumrah was asked how he would manage the expectations of Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid by helming the Indian pace attack upon his return. The cricketer said that he is unfazed by others’ opinions, as he does not want to add unnecessary baggage of expectations on himself.

“I respect others’ opinions about me, but I don’t take them seriously, be it positive or negative. I don’t want to put unnecessary baggage or pressure of others’ expectations upon myself. I am returning after a long time, so I just want to enjoy my game. I have not played international cricket for a while, and I have never been away from the game this long before.”

Bumrah also laughingly said that his primary focus is to prepare for his game and enjoy it to the fullest.

“Expectations from others are their own problems, not mine. My job is to prepare for the game, and enjoy it to the fullest, and to keep my best foot forward.”

The pace veteran will lead Team India in a three-match T20I series in Dublin. The first of those matches will be played on August 18, and the series itself serves as a testing ground ahead of his return for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup.
