The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Rohit Sharma T20I captain for the soon-to-start three-match series against Afghanistan, giving an insight into their plans for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim has backed Sharma as captain for the marquee event, stating his intensity and aggression will fuel the team's triumph.

Sharma last led India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where the nation finished as runners-up losing to eventual winners Australia after notching up a 10-match unbeaten streak in the run-up into the final. As quoted by India Today, Karim explained that Sharma is in prime form and that his inclusion into the side adds stability.

It just goes to show he still has the intensity and the aggression to lead India - Saba Karim

"This is a wonderful phase for Rohit Sharma. The way he led India in the ODI World Cup goes to shows his desire to win the World Cup for India. Rohit is in prime form. His fitness also has helped him grow in confidence. That is the reason why the Indian selectors have again opted for Rohit to lead the side, to bring that kind of stability to the side as a captain and as a batter. The way he walked the talk in the recently-concluded one-day matches. It just goes to show he still has the intensity and the aggression to lead India to that much-awaited World Cup triumph."

The 56-year-old further explained how Sharma's stellar form in ODIs was crucial to his T20I comeback. The former Mumbai Indians skipper amassed 597 runs in World Cup 2023, which included one century and three fifties.

Sharma will seen leading India in the first T20I this evening when they meet Afghanistan in Mohali.
