Indian skipper Rohit Sharma attended an official press conference ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series between India and New Zealand. The first Test is slated to begin on Wednesday, October 16, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

India recently announced the squad for the NZ series. At the same time, it has some notable inclusions, such as Indian bowling legend Jasprit Bumrah, who has been named India's vice-captain. In the pre-match press conference, Rohit heaped praise on Bumrah's excellence despite his limited captaincy experience.

"He's one of the experienced players in the team. He has not captained a lot but whatever I have discussed with him, he is always there when it comes to talking with the bowling group, bowlers or even for something during the match. It's good to have him around," he said.

Bumrah Could Captain India in Perth Test

Bumrah has been an imperative element of the Indian cricket team for years now. Whether it's the most extended or shortest format, he has been the go-to bowler to pick wickets at the most crucial junctures of a game. In fact, after his recent appointment as India's vice-captain, strong rumours indicate that he is highly likely to be the captain of the Indian cricket team in the upcoming first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

According to reports, India's regular skipper Rohit will miss the first Test against Australia. Rohit informed BCCI about this by stating a personal reason for his absence during the Perth Test. Moreover, further reports suggest that Rohit and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, are expecting the arrival of their second child during that time.

If these rumours are true, India could see Jasprit Bumrah take on against Australia as the skipper of the Indian contingent.

Bumrah Surpasses Ashwin To Become No.1 Test Bowler

Jasprit Bumrah has ascended to the top of the ICC Test bowling rankings, surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin after his brilliant 11 wicket-run against Bangladesh. Bumrah's stunning performance in just two matches, helped him achieve the remarkable feat as he currently sits at the top with 870 points.
