Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has expressed his desire to lead the Bangladesh men's cricket team in the future, particularly in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, who has mainly captained the national team.

Since Bangladesh's disastrous run in the World Cup 2023, Shakib has often been found saying that he's unsure about his future as captain. Najmul Hossain Shanto, who has captained the national team recently, has emerged as the frontrunner to take up the role. And now Taskin throws his hat in the ring.

Taskin's role as a bowler has evolved significantly over the years, progressing from being the third or fourth seam bowling option to emerging as the leader of the pace attack. Since recovering from injury, his performances across formats have been noteworthy.

"Yes, of course (whether he wants to lead his national side or not). Why not, every player has a dream. Everything will happen step by step," said Taskin Ahmed in response to questions about his leadership aspirations.

Currently participating in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024, Taskin serves as the vice-captain of Durdanto Dhaka, alongside captain Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, forming part of the team's leadership group.

Taskin emphasised the need for both of them to step up and guide the young team during the tournament.

"Our team is very young. There is Sujon sir, there is Mosaddek, I am also there, and there are many other experienced cricketers. Maybe due to availability problems, many foreign cricketers arrive late, some are not available at the right time. If we can organize the team that we have and play with unity, it will definitely be good,"  added Taskin.

In a remarkable start to their campaign, Dhaka defeated defending champions Comilla Victorians by five wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

Taskin played a crucial role, securing the wickets of established Bangladesh players Imrul Kayes and Towhid Hridoy, finishing with impressive figures of 4-0-30-2.

Returning to professional cricket after his last appearance in the World Cup on Indian soil, Taskin has been a pivotal part of the Bangladesh pace attack, particularly in the past two years.

Dhaka will face Chattogram Challengers, who also secured a winning start, in their next match on Monday, January 22.
