Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes Virat Kohli was let off easily even though the RCB legend meted out an aggressive celebration after winning the game against Punjab Kings. The prominent commentator also alleged a differential treatment between players in the league, citing the example of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi for his “notebook” celebration.

Aakash Chopra also recalled an ugly IPL incident involving CSK captain MS Dhoni, when the latter stormed into the field to argue with the officials and was fittingly fined 50 percent of his match fees.

Aakash Chopra believes Virat Kohli let off easily

Indian cricket expert Aakash Chopra slammed Virat Kohli for his overtly aggressive celebration after RCB’s emphatic win against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur. Chopra questioned why the legendary Indian batter was not given a “rap on his knuckles” over the same, even when young LSG spinner Digvesh Rathi was fined for his “notebook celebration”.

Taking to his YouTube channel, the former Indian opening batter said:

“We saw Virat Kohli’s celebration at the end of the PBKS-RCB match, that was also pure aggression. However, no one said anything to him. There is not even a rap on the knuckles. Nobody has pulled him up for that, but you did that when Digvesh Rathi did a ‘notebook’ celebration.”

Aakash Chopra also compared Virat Kohli’s aggressive celebration in front of Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer with a certain MS Dhoni incident from IPL 2019, when the legendary CSK skipper stormed into the field to argue with the umpires. Chopra stated that since Dhoni was fined for his misdemeanour, Kohli should have also been penalized in some form for his latest act. He said:

“I recall MS Dhoni was once fined 50 percent of his match fee because he entered the ground. He shouldn’t have gone at all. 50 percent of his match fee was immediately cut. It could have been more than that, but there was some action. However, it hasn’t happened in Virat Kohli’s case.”

Nonetheless, Virat Kohli and the rest of his RCB colleagues will now face the Rajasthan Royals in Bengaluru. The match will be played on Thursday, April 24 and the action is slated to commence from 7:30 PM IST onwards.
