Team India survived Heinrich Klaasen’s blinder to escape with a seven-run win to lift the 2024 T20 World Cup title. Senior paceman Jasprit Bumrah got the ball rolling in India’s favour by cleaning up South African opener Reeza Hendricks with a peach.

The speedster eventually finished with impressive figures of 2-18 from four overs, which proved instrumental in restricting the Proteas to 169-8 in a chase of 177.

Mohammed Siraj, who played the Group stages of the tournament, hailed teammate Jasprit Bumrah for his match-defining spell and also expressed his gratitude on being part of a World Cup winning team.

Mohammed Siraj says Bumrah bowled the defining over

Mohammed Siraj, who played a crucial role in India’s dominant Group A run this tournament, praised Jasprit Bumrah for delivering a match-defining performance in the title clash against South Africa at the Kensington Oval on June 29.

While speaking with Dinesh Karthik during India’s post-match celebration, Siraj said:“I was believing in only Jasprit Bumrah. He is a match-changing player and he bowled a match-changing over. It's unbelievable feeling.”

An emotional Mohammed Siraj also expressed his gratitude of becoming a part of a World Cup winning team, and recalled the heartache of India’s 2023 ODI World Cup defeat in the finals to Australia.

“DK (Dinesh Karthik) bhai, last year's World Cup, we lost in a same way. You were there in the last year's World Cup final. You want to win the World Cup as a player and thanks to dear Allah for this win.”

Batting first, India scored 176-7 courtesy of a splendid half-century from Virat Kohli and sizzling cameos from Axar Patel and Shivam Dube.

Later in the South African chase, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets each while Hardik Pandya came up clutch in the death overs.

Bumrah was eventually declared the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for finishing the 2024 T20 World Cup with 15 wickets.
