Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has sent a strong yet supportive message to Indian superstar Virat Kohli after his first-ball duck in the opening ODI against Australia in Perth. He urged him to stop the overthinking habit.

Kohli, who returned to ODI action after 7 months, was dismissed by Mitchell Starc, edging a delivery outside the off stump.

The early dismissal came as a surprise for fans, as Kohli was expected to put on a good show in Aussie conditions.

Matthew Hayden urges Virat Kohli to stop overthinking

Ahead of the 2nd ODI at Adelaide, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has sent valuable advice to Virat Kohli.

"Virat Kohli's striking ability and contact points are exceptional. After scoring 14,000 runs in this format, there's little to question about his approach, as he consistently plays the ball on the rise and finds timing early," Hayden said.

Speaking on Star Sports, Hayden reminded Kohli to trust his natural instincts and stop overthinking his approach on the crease.

"One thing I hope he avoids is arguing with himself and overthinking, which can lead to mistakes. He is destructive when he has clarity, certainty, and the ability to read the game—qualities his experience provides," he added.

Despite the setback, Hayden’s words were more of a motivation than a criticism and a reminder that even greats can have off days.

Kohli 1 step away from surpassing Sachin Tendulkar

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is on the brink of history as he gears up for India’s second ODI against Australia in Adelaide.

The 36-year-old needs just one more hundred to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in a single format.

Currently tied at 51 hundreds each, Virat Kohli can become the only batter in history to achieve 52 centuries in ODIs, a feat that would further cement his legacy as one of cricket’s greatest ever.
