Ashes 2023 | 'I Would Advocate Recalling Mitchell Starc...': Former Australian Bowler Jason Gillespie

In a bold decision, Australia opted to drop Mitchell Starc from Edgbaston Test and play Josh Hazlewood, which caught everyone off-guard. Starc, who played for Australia in their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 win over India, has a decent record bowling in England, having taken 37 in 10 Tests.

With Australia leading the Ashes 2023 1-0, and eyes all set on making it 2-nil, former pacer Jason Gillespie has urged the visitors to include Starc in the XI for the upcoming Lord's Test, which starts June 28.

Gillespie, known for his aggressive bowling, wrote in the column for Daily Mail that Starc could either replace Cameron Green, or Hazlewood as part of their rotation policy for the grueling five-Test tour.

Here's what Gillespie wrote

I would advocate recalling Mitchell Starc to the pace attack and, unless Cameron Green is fit and able to bowl, they may look at Mitchell Marsh as an alternative option in the all-rounder role. Starc could also come in for Josh Hazlewood but I feel this less likely as he was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings in Birmingham.

Yes, Starc can go for a few runs but if Australia were to employ similar fields to those they used on the opening day of this series, with three guys out on the fence, Starc will get protection and because he is a really attacking bowler — he tends to pitch the ball a lot further up than Test rivals, to get it swinging and bring yorkers into play — his team could benefit”

While Starc may have tormented England batters overall, claiming 74 wickets in 18 Tests, his track record on British shores is not that excellent as pointed out earlier.

It will be interesting, who gets the green signal for the second Test, with almost all Australian bowlers looking in good nick.
