In an emotional adieu that tugged at the heartstrings of Kolkata and fans alike, Gautam Gambhir bid farewell to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a team and city he helped forge into champions after a decade.

As the curtains close on his successful stint with KKR as it’s mentor, where he led them to their third IPL title, Gautam Gambhir is now set to don a new mantle as the head coach of the Indian team.

Gambhir's farewell reflected his bond with KKR fans

Gambhir took to social media to share a moving farewell to the city that had been his cricketing bastion.

In a heartfelt video message, the former skipper and mentor illustrated his deep connection with the team and the people of Kolkata, a relationship embroidered with mutual respect and shared dreams.

“Come Kolkata, let’s create some new legacies," Gambhir voiced in his tribute, reinforcing his bond with the team and the city.

His words painted a picture of unity and reflected the collective spirit of Kolkata:

"I smile when you smile. I cry when you cry. I win when you win. I lose, when you lose. I dream when you dream. I achieve when you achieve. I believe with you and I become with you. I am you, Kolkata, I'm just one of you."

In his video, Gambhir not only reflected on past glories but also cast an inspiring vision for the future.

"The time has come when we have to create some legacies together. The time has come when we have to write some bigger and bolder scripts. The script not with purple ink but in that blue, the treasured India blue," he declared, evoking a new era under his guidance.

As Gautam Gambhir steps into his role with a promise to script victorious chapters for India, his farewell from KKR is not a goodbye but a promise of returning glory, from the City of Joy to the broader pitches of international cricket.

In doing so, he assured that his journey will continue hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, with the millions whose hopes and dreams he carries into every game.

As he rightly put it, "It will all be for the tricolour. It will all be about our India."

It is worth mentioning that Gambhir's journey with KKR has been nothing short of a fairy tale. Having previously led them to titles in 2012 and 2014 as captain, his return as a mentor in 2024 saw him sprinkle that familiar magic dust, ending a decade-long wait for another trophy.

The IPL 2024 final against Sunrisers Hyderabad wasn't just a match won but a statement made, with KKR dominating every facet of the game.

However, the lure of national duty calls, and with it, Gambhir prepares to steer the ship of the Indian team. His new role as head coach is set to begin with a challenging tour to Sri Lanka, scheduled to start on July 27, featuring three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs.
