Veteran Test batter Ajinkya Rahane has praised Jasprit Bumrah for showing rare honesty and courage by openly communicating his workload plan before the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. He said Bumrah showed a lot of courage, as players often get dropped for the pick-and-choose approach.
Bumrah, currently ranked the No.1 Test bowler in the world, made it clear to the BCCI, captain Shubman Gill, and head coach Gautam Gambhir that he would play only three of the five Tests in England.
Staying true to his word, he featured in the first, third, and fourth matches, taking two sensational five-wicket hauls, one at Headingley and another at Lord’s, and finishing the series with 14 wickets.
Ajinkya Rahane Backs Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload Clarity
While Jasprit Bumrah is under sharp criticism for his ‘pick and choose’ approach, veteran cricketer Ajinkya Rahane deemed the pacer courageous.
In his latest YouTube video, Rahane praised Bumrah for communicating his plan with utmost clarity and also opined that such transparency is not common in Indian cricket, as most players in Jasprit’s place would get dropped.
“What I liked about the Bumrah situation was that he was pretty clear; he knew what he wanted to do before the series. He said, ‘I’ll play the first one, I won’t play the second one, and then I’ll play the third’. Great clarity for a captain. It shows that he has the courage to tell the captain and management to be really clear. Sometimes players convey the same message to the team, and then they get dropped," Rahane said.
Bumrah, since suffering from multiple blows on his lower back, has been advised by his doctors to minimise his workload, as another injury in the same spot could be career-threatening. Hence, Indian management has no choice but to honour Bumrah’s workload plan to safeguard his future.
What Future Holds For Bumrah? BCCI In Action Mode
According to the Indian Express, the BCCI is reportedly set to further limit Jasprit Bumrah’s game time despite his eagerness to play all formats. Having only played three Tests in England after back surgery, medical teams have warned about serious injuries if overused.
The goal is to preserve India’s star pacer in the run-up to important events like the 2026 T20 World Cup. Though Bumrah has shown willingness to play in all three formats, management is on the same page about controlling workload to ensure his long-term career. In his absence, pacers Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna impressed, making the BCCI more determined to keep their match-winning spearhead safe.
