Celebrating 18 years of India vs England T20I matches, here we take a look at the highest run-makers from either side in these encounters, from their first meeting in 2007 till mid-January 2025.

5. Eoin Morgan – 347 runs
Former England captain Eoin Morgan minted 347 runs from just 14 T20I innings against India between the years 2011 and 2021. The cricketer maintained a standard batting average of 26.69, but held on to a staggering strike rate of 141.63, marginally higher than his career T20I strike rate of 136.17. The blistering left-handed middle-order batter listed two half-centuries in the process, including the match-winning 31-ball 71 in Birmingham in September 2014 against an attack that comprised of the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja.
4. Jason Roy – 356 runs
Attacking English opener Jason Roy composed 356 runs from 15 innings against Team India at an average of 23.73. Scoring his runs at a strike rate of 131.85, he is one of the leading six-hitters (20 maximums) in the history of India vs England T20I matches, finding himself only behind fellow England national Jos Buttler as of mid-January 2025.
The cricketer hit just one half-century against India, doing so at Bristol’s County Ground back in July 2018 when he belted 67 runs from just 31 balls with four boundaries and seven towering sixes.

Former Indian T20I captain Rohit Sharma plundered 467 of his T20I career runs against England, at a splendid batting average of nearly 36 (35.92 to be exact). The legendary Indian opener also maintained a staggering strike rate of 139.82. Sharma’s lone century against the Englishmen occurred back in Bristol in July 2018 when he smeared an unbeaten 100 from just 56 balls with 11 boundaries and five sixes to headline India’s series victory.
The cricketer also clobbered six boundaries and two sixes in a match winning 39-ball 57 in the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, thus marking one of his three half-centuries against the English bowlers.
2. Jos Buttler – 498 runs

Current England captain Jos Buttler has muscled 498 runs against Indian bowlers in 19 T20I innings spanning 22 matches, right up until the start of the five-match T20I series between the two nations in January 2025. The attacking right-hander did so at a regal average of 33.20, and a blistering strike rate of 145.61. Buttler is also the leading six-hitter in India vs England matches with 21 maximums.
The seasoned Englishman tallied four half-centuries, with the most famous of them being the 49-ball 80* he hammered down on the ‘Men in Blue’ bowlers in the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval. Back in March 2021, Jos Buttler also smeared 83* from just 52 balls against India at the grand Narendra Modi Stadium in a match-winning cause for England.

Modern-day batting behemoth Virat Kohli, unsurprisingly, remains the highest run-maker in India vs England T20I matches even after nearly half-a-year from his format retirement. The Indian run machine racked up 648 runs in just 21 innings during his career, at an astonishing average of 38.11. The cricketer also maintained a propelling strike rate of 135, and fueled his runs with 61 boundaries (the highest among all players in India vs England), and 19 separate maximums.
Notably, Virat Kohli made 231 of those runs in a single five-match home series from early 2021, composing three half-centuries in the process and maintaining a strike rate of 147.13. Kohli also cooked a splendid 50 against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinals, but his innings was largely overshadowed by Jos Buttler’s run-chase spectacle later in the evening.
