Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) might not have a trophy in the cabinet yet but when it comes to lighting up the Chinnaswamy and giving fans moments to cherish, very few teams do it better. Over the years, we have seen some insane hitting from the red-and-gold brigade and when it comes to quickfire fifties, the batters have gone full throttle.
On Saturday, one such knock was on display when all-rounder Romario Shepherd entered the record books to secure the fastest fifty by an RCB player. Shepherd’s fifty came against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 52 of IPL 2025.
On that note, let’s take a look at the top 5 fastest fifties in the IPL by RCB batters.
5. Robin Uthappa: 19 balls vs Kings XI Punjab, Bengaluru, 2010
Way before power-hitting became the new normal, Robin Uthappa showed everyone what timing and clean striking looked like. Chasing a huge 204 against Punjab, Uthappa walked in like a man on a mission.
He smoked a 21-ball 51 and brought up his fifty in just 19 balls with ease. It was full of swagger, flicks, pulls and a few brutal hits down the ground. In a chase where others were steady, Uthappa brought the fire and RCB romped home with 7 balls to spare.
4. Rajat Patidar: 19 balls vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Hyderabad, 2024
This was Rajat Patidar in beast mode. No footwork fuss, no fancy stuff, just clean hitting. Against Sunrisers in Hyderabad in IPL 2024, the right-hander took on the bowlers like Pat Cummins, Mayank Markande as if he was batting in a net session.
He hammered a 50 off 20 balls, reaching the milestone in 19 deliveries. His knock was filled with brutal intent: 5 sixes, 2 boundaries and not a moment of breathing space for SRH bowlers. RCB posted over 206/7 before restricting SRH to 171/8.
3. Faf du Plessis: 18 balls vs Gujarat Titans, Bengaluru, 2024
Captain leading from the front? Tick. Faf du Plessis went ballistic against Gujarat Titans at the Chinnaswamy in IPL 2024 after his side bowled out the visitors for 147. He smashed a 50 off 18 balls in one of the cleanest hitting displays from a top-order batter.
Nothing sloggy, nothing rash, just textbook power-hitting mixed with South African finesse. 10 fours, 3 sixes, and a strike rate flirting with 280, this was vintage Faf doing Faf things as RCB chased the target in just 13.4 overs with four wickets to spare.
2. Chris Gayle: 17 balls vs Pune Warriors India, Bengaluru, 2013
Ah, the 'GayleStorm' of 2013. If you were lucky enough to witness this live, you will never forget it. Against the now-defunct Pune Warriors India, Chris Gayle didn’t just score a fifty. He dismantled the laws of physics.
His 50 off 17 balls was just the appetizer as he ended up with an unbeaten 175* off 66 balls, which still stands as the highest T20 score ever. Boundaries rained down like confetti. 13 fours, 17 sixes and bowlers looking like they wanted to disappear as RCB posted 263/5. In response, PWI managed to score just 133/9 as the hosts won by a whopping 130 runs.
1. Romario Shepherd: 14 balls vs Chennai Super Kings, Bengaluru, 2025
And now, we have got a new record holder. Romario Shepherd, take a bow! On Saturday night against CSK, RCB were stuttering a bit towards the death after a strong start. Then walked in Romario and all hell broke loose.
He clobbered a fifty in just 14 balls, the fastest ever for RCB. With 4 fours and 6 sixes, Shepherd turned the last few overs into a highlight reel. He didn’t just hit the ball, he butchered it. CSK’s bowlers had no answers as RCB scored 54 off the last two overs and posted 213/5.
