Just when it looked like the New Zealand side would struggle against Australia in the first T20I, their number 3 batter, Tim Robinson, came like a messiah and saved the team from a horrendous collapse. The ball was doing enough for the pacers and the Australian bowlers scalped 3 early wickets to rock the home side.
This is when Robinson stepped up and thrashed the Australian bowlers to all corners of the Bay Oval ground. He batted with precision and steered the Kiwis out of a precarious situation to strengthen his team’s position in the first T20I match, and gained attention with a whirlwind 106 of 66 balls.
Who is Tim Robinson, the new New Zealand star?
Tim Robinson has had an interesting journey so far, as he was a javelin thrower before he became a professional cricketer. The 23-year-old is a hard-hitting aggressive batter, and he first hogged the limelight during the 2023-24 Super Smash season, when he smacked 298 runs in six matches, with a strike rate of 187.42.
The Kiwi selectors noticed his skills and less than four months after his stellar Super Smash campaign, he was picked in the senior T20I squad for the away series against Pakistan. He had a horrendous start, getting dismissed by Shaheen Afridi for a duck on his debut, but the batter left the past behind and scored a brilliant hundred to take the Kiwis to a strong total against the Australians.
Before the first T20I game, Robinson had accumulated 278 runs, with a strike rate of 130, including two fifties.
Generally an opener, Robinson played at number 3 against the Australian side, and he made the most of his opportunity as he scored a quick-fire hundred with a strike rate of 160.
