Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has heaped high praise on Punjab Kings' batter Jitesh Sharma, stating that the right-hander will soon be playing for the national T20 team.

Sharma has proved to be a breath of fresh air in the Indian white-ball ecosystem with his fearless approach to batting in the past two seasons of the IPL.

He has been sensational this season, often coming out to bat at the death, and smoking big shots from the word go.

Sharma's scores in IPL 2023 read: 21 (11), 27 (17), 4 (9), 25 (23), 2 (4), 41 (27), 25 (7), 24 (10), 21 (10) & 49 (27).

He was at his brutal best in the previous fixture against the Mumbai Indians as he smashed 2 sixes and 5 fours to power his way to a 27-ball 49.

Speaking on CricBuzz Live, Sehwag said that Jitesh is following the basic mantra of batting, something he used to follow during his distinguished career- see the ball, and react accordingly.

“I always tell kids, just see the ball and do whatever you think you can with it, hit it, leave it or block it. Those are the simple basics of batting and that is what Jitesh Sharma was doing. He was looking at the ball and if it was hittable he was going for it or taking a single,”

Sehwag was particularly pleased with the way Jitesh constructed his innings against MI albeit in pristine batting conditions and against a substandard bowling attack.

"The wicket was great and the bowling wasn't that great. But even then, you have to make those runs. Even though the bowling was weak, he worked for those runs. His shot selection was great.

"I have said this earlier as well, Jitesh Sharma is a watch out player, maybe in the next one year we will get to see him playing for India."

Jitesh has thus far scored 239 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 165.97 with the help of 18 fours and 16 maximums.
