Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal has opined that the T20I side would have been better with the experienced duo of Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim in it, for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Rahim retired from the format last month following Bangladesh's group-stage exit from the Asia Cup while former skipper Mahmudullah was dumped from the set-up following a prolonged lean patch in the shortest format of the game.

Speaking to CricBuzz, Tamim Iqbal questioned the selectors' decision to drop two senior pros before such a big event despite carrying them for the entire year.

Here's what Tamim Iqbal said:

"I told you earlier if Mushfiqur (Rahim), Riyad (Mahmudullah) were there in this big stage like the World Cup, then I think it would have been better. Since you carried such senior cricketers for the whole year, then why (exclude) them just before the World Cup."

Tamim Iqbal urges Bangladesh to give youngsters a longer rope

Bangladesh have rejigged their batting line-up by promoting Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Sabbir Rahman at the top of the order.

With the talented left-handed Afif Hossain and Yasir Ali spearheading the middle-order, Bangladesh are looking to usher in a new era, and Tamim has urged the selectors and management to give the young batters, especially the opening duo a long rope before they are judged.

He also cited the example of current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who was given a prolonged rope by the MS Dhoni-led management during his initial years despite his underwhelming returns.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh will look to put up a better show with the bat when they face hosts New Zealand in their 2nd game of the ongoing T20I tri-series.

The tourists fell short by 21 runs in their opening game against Pakistan earlier this week, and will lock horns with the BlackCaps to salvage their campaign on October 9th in Christchurch.
