South African left-arm orthodox Keshav Maharaj has come out in support of his partner, left-arm wrist-spinner, Tabraiz Shamsi, over the latter's poor performance in the 1st ODI against India in Lucknow.

Shamsi endured a forgettable outing in Lucknow as he was clobbered for 89 runs in 8 overs by the likes of Shreyas Iyer and then Sanju Samson.

Maharaj, who registered match-winning figures of 1/23 (in 8 overs) in the 1st ODI, reckoned that his partner-in-crime, Shamsi, will come roaring back in the next two games.

He also reminded everyone of the fact that Shamsi had a good series against England back in July, where he claimed a five-wicket haul.

Speaking to the media ahead of the 2nd ODI in Ranchi, Keshav Maharaj said:

'He is a world-class bowler. I don't think his confidence is dented. He has done well for us and it's only a matter of time before he repeats his performance like in England and picks a fifer."

Maharaj further added that he does not think that Shamsi had a poor day at the office in Lucknow.

He stated that since the Indian batters had no choice but to go ballistic in order to reach the total, they had to get after one bowler, and unfortunately for Shamsi, it proved to him.

However, Maharaj lauded Shamsi for getting the job done in the end.

"I don't think he had a bad day, the bowling figures are not really reflective of it. The Indian batters had to take someone on and unfortunately, it was him."

With India needing 30 off the last 6 deliveries, Sanju Samson smashed Shamsi for 20, but it eventually didn't prove to be enough.

The 2nd ODI will take place in Ranchi on October 9.
