The cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull has urged the Australian management to include Kane Richardson in Playing XI in order to get results in their favour.

Doull's comments came after Australia were handed an 89-run loss by New Zealand in their T20 World Cup opener against New Zealand on Saturday.

The bowling unit was below-par with their performance, which saw the Kiwi team posting a mammoth score of 200 on the board. Josh Hazlewood picked two wickets, while Adam Zampa picked a solitary wicket.

In reply, the entire batting unit succumbed to pressure and proficient New Zealand bowlers and bundled out for 111. Glenn Maxwell returned as the top-scorer with 28 off 20.

In this regard, Doull thinks Richardson should feature in the Australia lineup in place of Pat Cummins. Although Cummins contributed 21 with the willow, he conceded 46 runs off four overs.

The 53-year-old added that Richardson can offer variations, which can break the opposition batters' momentum and contain the flow of runs. He thinks New Zealand's Tim Southee did very well with his change-ups to finish with figures of 3/6, which was missing in Australia's bowling.

"I think Australia would be concerned, I'd be concerned with some of the parts of the bowling," Doull told Zainab Abbas on the Digital Daily .

"I think Kane Richardson should be playing. I feel that he offers them a few variations that they just don't have. (Mitchell )Starc, (Josh) Hazlewood, Cummins - they don't have a really good change-up bowler."

The Aaron Finch-led side will now clash with Sri Lanka on Tuesday (October 25) in Perth Stadium.
