Australian cricketer, Steve Smith, has addressed recent rumours that he would be replacing New Zealand's Kane Williamson in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. There has been a significant buzz surrounding Smith's potential return to the IPL, particularly after the Gujarat Titans batter sustained an injury during the tournament's opening match.

Williamson injured his right leg after attempting to stop a six from Ruturaj Gaikwad during Gujarat Titans' five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings. With the former New Zealand captain ruled out of IPL 2023, fans and commentators alike have speculated that the Australian talisman could be brought in as a replacement.

"I don't know if I'll qualify' - Steve Smith

However, in a recent interview with Star Sports, Smith denied these rumors, stating that he had not put himself forward for the IPL auction and did not know if he would qualify to play in the tournament. The unorthodox batter last played in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals in 2021.

“I don’t know if I’ll qualify, I didn’t even put myself in the auction. So I don’t think there’s even a possibility. So, maybe next year, we will see where we go,” said Smith.

Smith further elaborated on his experience the IPL, noting that playing against the world's best players and sharing dressing rooms with cricketing legends like MS Dhoni and Jos Buttler had been incredible. He also praised the growth of the tournament since its inception 15 years ago.

“IPL has just been unbelievable since its start 15 years ago and it just continues to grow and grow,” added the Australian.

It remains to be seen whether Gujarat Titans will attempt to recruit Smith for the IPL 2023, given his non-inclusion in the auction. However, with the tournament set to continue for several weeks, fans will be eagerly watching to see if any further developments arise regarding Smith's potential involvement.
