Steve Kirby appointed Zimbabwe's bowling coach

Former English cricketer Steve Kirby has been announced as the new bowling coach of Zimbabwe senior men’s team. He is slated to join the side prior to the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.

The 44-year-old has previously collaborated with active Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton during his time at Derbyshire.

Kirby, a first-class veteran, has played over 150 County Championship matches for Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. 

He also served Somerset as their bowling coach until coach, after being appointed to the role following his Derbyshire stint in December 2020.

Zimbabwe Cricket Director Hamilton Masakadza expressed his delight over acquiring the former English pacer. He said:

“We are delighted to confirm Steve as our Bowling Coach for the senior men’s team. He has done incredibly well as a player and coach in county cricket over the years and, as we seek to continue strengthening all facets of our game and improving our performances at the highest level.

We count ourselves privileged and fortunate to have him as part of our technical set-up.”

Zimbabwe’s next assignment features a trip to Australia for the all-important T20 World Cup. They will compete in the qualifying round and are placed in Group B alongside West Indies, Ireland and Scotland.

The Craig Ervine-led will commence their campaign with a clash against Ireland on October 17 in Hobart.
