Rohit Sharma has always been considered one of the best players of white ball cricket. A decade ago from today, the current Indian ODI and Test skipper proved why is a level above his competitors.

It was a comeback match for the Indian opener from a finger injury he suffered on August 2014. India were taking on Sri Lanka at the iconic Eden Gardens. India batted first in the match and Sharma looked shaky at the start. In fact his innings could have ended at four had Thisara Perera not dropped him.

Rohit Sharma Makes The Most Of The Chance Given To Him

Rohit Sharma made the most of the life he got and thrashed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all part of the ground. He played a superhuman knock and scored his second ODI double Hundred. In the process, Sharma went past his own 209, Virender Sehwag's 219 and the world record of 229 by Belinda Clark set in 1997.

Sharma was finally dismissed in the last ball off the innings. By then the Indian maverick had scored 264 runs of 173 deliveries. His innings was decorated with 33 fours and nine sixes. The first 100 runs came at a run a ball for Sharma and then the next 164 runs off just 73 deliveries. This showed the maturity, temperament and adaptibility of the batter.

Rohit Sharma Beats Sri Lanka By 13 Runs

Courtesy of Rohit Sharrma's stellar knock and Virat Kohli's fiery 66 off 64 India posted a mammoth total of 404/5 in their 50 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka could only manage 251 before they were bundled out in the 44th over of the innings. Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimane scored half-centuries but it was not enough to take the team's total past Rohit Sharma's score. Dhawal Kulkarni was the pick of the bowlers for India with four wickets for 34 runs in his 10 overs.

Conclusion

The knock by Rohit Sharma sits as a world record at present and it would be difficult to break it any time soon. The innings was a testament to Sharma's skill and temperament. From there he went onto play many more great knocks for India and etched his name one of the greatest Indian batters to have ever graced the game.
