New Zealand off-spinner William Somerville is set to retire from professional cricket after completing the ongoing domestic season early next month. Somerville played six Tests for the Kiwis between 2018 and 2021, which included a famous win over Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, where the bowler claimed seven wickets in his debut match.

Somerville has played for teams like Otago and Auckland in New Zealand and represented New South Wales for two seasons.

The 38-year-old played in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Sydney Sixers during his stay in Australia.

As per ESPN Cricinfo, Somerville stated that he had achieved more than what he wanted and loved his time as a cricketer.

Here's what Somerville said

"I've achieved more than what I thought I could achieve after becoming a professional cricketer at 30-years old. I've played nine seasons professionally and loved every minute of it."

Somerville's last international appearance came in 2021, during the New Zealand tour of India.

Overall, the Wellington-born has played six Tests, 51 First-Class, 35 List-A, and 43 T20 matches, picking up 150 wickets and scoring 1,659 runs combined.

His last FC game will be against Central Stags in the ongoing Plunket Shield 2022-23 next month.
