The former Australia batter Michael Bevan opened up on his top three contenders at the T20 World Cup, stating the defending T20 World Champions will head into the tournament as favourites with the home advantage.

Bevan also believes that finisher Matthew Wade will once again play a key role for the hosts in the showpiece event. The left-hander clobbered three sixes to Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi in the 19th over to seal the semi-final win for Australia last year.

During an interaction with AFP, here's what Michael Bevan said:

"I think they [Australia] are good enough. They have got plenty of skills floating around. They are defending champions; they have got the home-ground advantage."

"I would say they are enough positives for me to be able to say Australia has a solid chance of winning this World Cup."

Speaking on Matthew Wade, Bevan said the wicket-keeper batter is the ideal man for the finishing role in Australia. Notably, Wade has looked in ominous touch in recent times, churning out a string of stellar performances with the bat.

"He has had some really good innings under pressure in that role. Hopefully, this will be the role that the Australian selectors see him in -- there are really good signs about Matthew Wade and the Australian batting line-up with him in that position."

Australia's top three need to fire: Bevan

Bevan further conceded that Australia's top order, which includes the likes of Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith need to step up if they have to retain the title.

"I think the three previous keys for Australia in the past have been David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith and to a degree they have all had question marks or issues coming into this tournament surrounding them."

"A good Australia team wants those three players firing and performing for them to have a chance."

Bevan, a two-time World Cup winner, signed off saying that the team having the best bowling attack will fancy its chances of winning the T20 World Cup 2022.

"I think (spinners) will play a fair part but whoever has got the best fast bowling attacks will probably be the ones that come out on top in this World Cup."
