The 'Mankad' mode of dismissal has been in the limelight lately, and it almost stole Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka's thunder last evening in the first ODI against India

Shanaka, who scored an unbeaten 108, was ran-out at the non-striker's end by Indian bowler Mohammad Shami on 98 before skipper Rohit Sharma decided to withdraw the appeal.

Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has praised Rohit for showing exemplary sportsmanship in the match. Despite Shanaka's best efforts with the bat, Sri Lanka lost the encounter by 67 runs chasing 374 to win.

Apart from Mathews, former Lankan opener and World Cup-winning player Sanath Jayasuriya also praised Rohit's noble gesture.

Here's what Mathews tweeted

"Not many captains would do this but hats off to @ImRo45 for withdrawing the appeal even though the law says so! Displaying great sportsmanship."

Here's what Jayasuriya tweeted

"The real winner was the sportsmanship of Rohit Sharma for refusing to take the run out. I doff my cap to you!"

In the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed that he was unaware of Shami's plans to run out Shanaka, and felt it was unfair on the Lankan captain to be dismissed in such a fashion, having batted brilliantly.

Sri Lanka will hope to make a comeback in the second ODI at Kolkata and help level the three-match series 1-1.
