Away from the spotlight and under the shadows of Marnus Labuchagne and Steve Smith, one of Australia's mainstays in Tests, Usman Khawaja surpassed 1,000 Test runs in 2022. Khawaja achieved this landmark during his unbeaten knock of fifty in the ongoing second Test between Australia and West Indies, taking place in Adelaide.

Needing 40 to 1,000 Test runs this year, Khawaja scored his 19th red-ball fifty for Australia, taking his side to 89 for 1 at dinner on Day 1 of the customary day-night Test.

In 2022, Khawaja has amassed 1,013* Test runs with four hundred and as many fifties and is the third batter after England's Joe Root (1,069) and Jonny Bairstow (1,061) to this mark.

Leading run-scorer in Tests in 2022

  • Joe Root (England) - 1,069 runs in 13 matches
  • Jonny Bairstow (England) - 1,061 runs in 10 matches
  • Usman Khawaja (Australia) - 1,013* in 9 matches
  • Babar Azam (Pakistan) - 8,01 runs in 6 matches
  • Zak Crawley (England) - 7,81 runs in 13 matches

The left-handed opener became the first Australian batter to cross 1,000 Test runs in a single calendar year after 2019 when Labuschagne achieved this feat.

Interestingly, this is also the first time that Khawaja has made 1,000 or more Test runs in a single year since making his debut in 2011.

In 52 Tests, the 36-year-old has 3,908* runs at an average of 47.66 with 12 tons and 19 half-centuries.
