The former captain of the Pakistani cricket team, Javed Miandad, has become the center of a maelstrom of controversy in the wake of his remarks regarding India's refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023. Miandad, never one to mince his words, stated that India could go to hell, eliciting widespread criticism from individuals in both nations.
Providing clarification on his statement, Miandad released a YouTube video to shed some light on his remarks. He stated that the absence of the Indian cricket team in Pakistan would have little to no impact on the host nation.
However, he was of the view that the strained cricketing relations between the two nations should be mended quickly, and the Indian team's participation in the Asia Cup would have sent out a positive message.
"Can you explain the meaning of hell? If you're not interested in playing, it's okay. We won't take offense. Just ask Indian cricketers. They will also tell you that it would be beneficial for both countries if cricket were played between the two teams in their respective countries," Miandad said.
"If the Indian team thinks that their refusal to visit Pakistan has any impact, let me tell you it doesn't. That's what I meant when I said we are self-sufficient. Pakistan has produced top-notch cricketers and hockey players. Across the world, neighboring countries play sports with each other. We also have self-respect. We are respected all around the world," Miandad added.
The most recent encounter between India and Pakistan occurred during the T20 World Cup of 2022, where the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, emerged triumphant with a margin of four wickets.
India are currently playing Australia at home in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy whereas Pakistan players are gearing up for Pakistan Super League (PSL) which will commence on February 13.
