IPL 2023 | Ricky Ponting Opens Up on David Warner's Appointment as Delhi Capitals' Captain
Warner will lead DC this season [IPLT20.COM]
Delhi Capitals will be under the leadership of Australian opener David Warner for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Warner replaces Rishabh Pant, who is under rehabilitation after suffering a near-fatal accident in December last year.
Speaking to the media, head coach Ricky Ponting explained why Warner was the front-runner to don the captaincy hat. Indian All-rounder Axar Patel has been named Warner's deputy this season.
As quoted by Mykhel the former Australia captain stated that the opener's experience at the international level tilted the management in his favour.
Interestingly, Warner is the third DC captain in as many years for the franchise, after Shreyas Iyer (2021) and Rishabh Pant (2022).
Here's what Ponting said
"He has been around the Australian team for a number of years. We wanted to pick him in the auction before our last campaign. Obviously he was the captain before and he has a whole lot of experience on the field.
He brings a lot of passion, a lot of skill, he brings a lot of experience and has led SRH to a title. Successful IPL teams always throughout history had good, strong leaders and that's the goal at DC,"
The 36-year-old earlier led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their only IPL title win back in 2016, before being involved in the infamous Sandpaper-Gate Scandal.
DC takes on the Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 in their opening encounter this edition.
