IPL 2023 | Ravi Shastri Backs Shubman Gill to Surpass Virat Kohli's 'This' Record

Virat Kohli's  973 runs in a single Indian Premier League (IPL) is a pipedream for several cricketers and remains one of the most difficult records to break. Kohli, playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2016, amassed 973 runs which included four centuries, seven fifties and one duck.

However, records are meant to be broken, and former Indian player and coach Ravi Shastri has backed Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill to surpass Kohli's tally of 973 runs.

Gill has lately been in red-hot form, slamming as many as three international centuries since the start of 2023. In the ongoing IPL 2023, Gill has slammed 116 runs for GT in three matches.

Speaking on Star Sports, Shastri explained that Kohli's feat can only be matched by an opener.

Here's what Shastri said

"He has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel, it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point of time only he will already have 300-400 runs,"

Fun Fact: Kohli is the only player to score 900+ runs in an IPL season, Jos Buttler comes second with 863.

Gill will be in action for Gujarat in their second away game when they face Punjab Kings on Thursday in Mohali.
