Australian captain Aaron Finch says that the upcoming series against India will be used to test out possible selection combinations for the T20 World Cup next month. The cricketer recently retired from ODIs but will continue to lead his side in the shortest format.

Australia’s T20 World Cup title defence will commence on October 22 with a Group A match against Antipodean rivals New Zealand.

Finch says combinations key to World Cup title defence

Finch interacted with the reporters ahead of the series opener against India at Mohali. He stated that they will be taking the local conditions into account for selection, all while keeping an eye on the T20 World Cup at home next month, despite the stark contrast of the playing conditions in both countries.

The Australian opening batter said:

"Every decision that we make has one eye towards the World Cup and seeing the wicket yesterday it looked like there was quite a bit of grass on it. We know in Mohali the ball can swing around and it can carry through quite a bit,"

"We'll be mindful of not being too narrow minded in terms of our focus – what we've tried to do over the last eight to 10 months is to make sure everything we're doing in the T20 space ties back to the World Cup."

The first of the three T20Is between hosts India and Australia will be played out on September 20. The short tour will conclude with the final match on September 25 at Hyderabad.

Australia’s subsequent assignment features five T20Is against West Indies and England at home, which will mark their final set of fixtures before the main event.
